INDIANAPOLIS (May 24, 2017) - Oliver Askew, a USF2000 rookie from Jupiter, FL, has been named the newest Rising Star Racing (RSR) driver.

The 20-year-old immediately caught the eye of RSR founder Art Wilmes after winning five of his first six USF2000 starts with Cape Motorsports in 2017. In 2016, he won the Team USA Mazda Road to Indy scholarship and finished second in the Walter Hayes Trophy Grand Final.
“We’re very excited to have Oliver (Askew) joining the RSR family,” Wilmes said. “We haven’t added a driver since we first formed in 2013, which speaks to our assessment of Oliver and his potential in American open wheel racing.”
RSR provides funding, marketing support, and career guidance to its drivers with the goal of helping them through the various rungs of the Mazda Road to Indy. Askew will benefit from the past experiences of his fellow RSR drivers Josef Newgarden, Spencer Pigot and Neil Alberico.
“Rising Star Racing is a very unique program that has been incredibly beneficial for guys like me as they pursue their dreams of becoming professional race car drivers,” Askew said. “I’ve always wanted to be part of this program, and I feel very privileged and fortunate to have been brought on. I look up to drivers like Josef Newgarden, and to have a chance to follow in his footsteps at RSR is something I can’t wait to do.”
One key element of the RSR program is that the drivers themselves help select each other.
“Having been in the Verizon IndyCar Series for five seasons now, I still keep my eye on the Indy Lights, Pro Mazda and USF2000 series,” Josef Newgarden said. “It wasn’t that long ago I was there myself, and it’s always exciting when you see someone really talented like Oliver pop up. A lot more than just driving goes into being a professional racer, and RSR is super helpful in navigating all of those areas like media, sponsorship and management.”
Askew will begin working immediately with Rising Star Racing as he continues to pursue the 2017 USF2000 Championship with Cape Motorsports. He currently leads the championship by 60 points, and next races at Elkhart Lake, WI on June 23 – 25.
